She was… dying.

Bleeding out. And there was precious little she could do about it. She was way beyond the stage where she could lean down and pluck up the device still lying next to the sofa.

She could barely keep her eyes open, let alone push her body forward and scrounge the motor control necessary to pick up the device.

Just when she was on the edge of slipping into unconsciousness one final time, she heard a hiss and the main door opened.

She managed to press her eyes open. She expected to see the Prince. Expected to see his falsely calm, smug face. She may be on the edge of death, but she couldn’t ignore her gut reaction to him. She didn’t trust the guy and wouldn’t. Not even now.

As she pressed her bleary eyes open one last time, that’s not what she saw. The sight of glinting silver-red armor met her eyes.

From somewhere, from some precious place deep in her body, Ava found the energy to press forward, open her eyes wide, and let her trembling lips part. “Hunter!”

Immediately he dropped to his knees beside her sofa, scooped a hand across the floor, plucked up the device, and handed it to her. “Ava, you’re at death’s door. Come on, use this.”

She barely glanced at it as she accepted it off him. “But how do you know this will help me?”

“Just take it.” He practically forced it into her grip.

She couldn’t easily ignore the desperate edge to his tone or the quick flighty quality to his movements.

She let him push the device into her shaking, blood-covered hands.

As soon as the slim smooth metal pressed against her skin, she felt it. The power. It arced through her flesh, down into her wrist, and sank deep into her elbow. It was so powerful, so quick that it cut the pain almost immediately, replacing it with this heady tingle that rang through her mind as if a lightning bolt had discharged between her ears.

Hunter took a snapped step back, twisted his head to the side, and let out a small, low chuckle. “Lucky I found you in time.”

“But how did you get here?” The device worked so quickly that she now had no trouble speaking. She even found the strength to sit straight.

“The Prince found me, actually.”

Ava found the strength to crumple her brow and lean even further forward on the sofa. “What?”

“He found me in the crowd outside in the trading hall. Obviously, he realized I could bring you to your senses, and he brought me here.”

“But… you trust him?”

Hunter paused. She’d give anything to see his expression. “Yes, I guess I do,” he replied evenly.

“Guess?”

“Sure, we just met the guy. But if he hadn’t given you that,” Hunter pointed at the device still pressed firmly into her palm, “you’d be dead, Ava.” Despite the electronic distortion of Hunter’s armor, she heard his voice waver.

She wanted to press to her feet. For some reason, she wanted to stand next to him to stare at his face.
